Forest School at Hillview
Originating in Denmark, Forest School was introduced to the UK in the 1990s. It is an inspirational process, offering learners regular opportunities to develop confidence, independence, self-esteem and resilience through hands-on learning within in the natural world.
Here at Hillview, we believe that Forest School supports our curriculum values and the work we are doing to develop good learning behaviours, mindset and well-being. We are fortunate to have a wonderful Forest School space, consisting of a variety of native trees, a base camp with fire square, large climbing log and a well-stocked mud kitchen. We also benefit from a pond, located on the opposite side of the school field.
What activities might we do at Forest School?
We take inspiration from the natural world around us and the seasonal changes and festivals that occur to provide engaging sessions for the children. Forest School has an emphasis on child-led learning and as such, our planning adapts to the interests and needs of the children. During our Forest School sessions we may:
- Make dens and shelters
- Create art using natural materials
- Build things, including obstacle courses using natural resources
- Climb trees and balance on logs
- Learn how to use woodland tools
- Build fires and learn about fire safety
- Explore, investigate and learn about the natural world
- Look after and manage the site
- Play games
- Use ropes and learn to tie different knots
- Spend time reflecting and listening
- Play and use our imaginations
What do we wear at Forest School?
“There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”.
At Hillview, we go out in all weathers, when safe to do so. The children bring their own suitable Forest School clothes and wellington boots, to include:
- full length trousers
- long sleeve top and jumper
- coat
- warm socks (plus spares)
- gloves and woolly hat
- sun hat in warm weather
- waterproof clothing is provided by school, however you are welcome to bring your own.
What are our Forest School rules?
Here are our rules to keep us safe at Forest School:
- We enjoy our time at Forest school and respect and look after our environment
- No leaving the Forest School boundary
- We do not harm living creatures
- We do not pick anything that is growing
- We do not eat anything or put our fingers in our mouth
- We carry any sticks safely with our thumb over the end
- We do not enter the fire area in the centre of base camp
Overall, Forest School at Hillview provides the children with a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment in which to develop a life-long love of nature and a sense of care and responsibility for the natural world in which we live. We look forward to welcoming you!
